My Hang Thi Bui, PhD

Political Geography and Migrant Studies

My name is My Hang. I currently serve as research fellow at Seoul National University Asia Center (SNUAC). I have a PhD in Geography from Seoul National University.

As a geographer with a particular interest in migration, development, and inter-Asian engagements, I approach migrant studies with narratives of empowerment and intra-group diversity. I delve into the migration-development nexus by not only examining how migration can foster development in the sending society but also recognising its significance in addressing contemporary challenges such as demographic crises in the receiving country. My PhD dissertation on the politics of sister city placemaking between South Korea and Vietnam indeed began with the intention to empower the stories of Vietnamese migrants in South Korea within the dynamics of transnational connections between the two nations. My upcoming research project will further include the migration and settlement experiences of Korean communities in Vietnam. Simultaneously considering the migration of Vietnamese to South Korea, I look forward to bringing an inter-Asian perspective to the field of decolonising migration studies.

You can check out my documentaries on immigration issues in South Korea, including multicultural families, foreign students, migrant workers, and LGBTQ+ foreigners, on People Broadcasting.
